This is my stab at an epic song. I used the novel "A Winter's Tale" by
Mark Helprin as my inspiration for the lyrics, so the parts that don't
make any sense or seem too much like platitudes are really references
to the book, I swear! I think the version I have up now is edited down
from the original, which was almost 5 minutes long! Anyway, I really like
the overall sound of this one, though the singing needs work. I did a
part that to me was like something off Beck's "Mutations", with
the instruments doing a long melody line in unison.
Lyrics
you better grow some wings and learn how to fly 'cause this earthbound life is fading away time for new beginnings to open your mind all your pain and strife will fade away softer than feathers and lighter than air lift up your gaze and face your dreams don't wait for others to learn to be fair live now with grace facing your dreams chorus to become more than you are you must know who you were to see how far you can go you must look past tomorrow to forget about your fear you must learn to hear the song the heavens sing you are the only one in your way beyond the horizon you can see the city of the golden age and the bridge of light it is your decision your will that is free though the hand of fate has pulled you through time a wall of clouds spans the plains of life and death earth and stars be patient now or your courage will fail in this moment of truth you must sacrifice chorus
Etc.
I mixed a few odd flavors into this song. There is a live electric bass track,
in addition to a MIDI upright bass track. Everything's in dropped D. There are
two rhythm acoustic tracks, and an ethereal reverby and echoy slide guitar track,
which I was really into doing at the time. The drums switched between two of the
different drum patches on my cheesy Korg X5, and get kinda spastic at the end of
the bridge.
